Dubai Rugby 7's
I'm now in Dubai. I'm here at the invitation of the Arabian Gulf Referees for the Dubai Rugby 7's - a major event on the world rugby calendar. Expecting 20000-30000 at matches on Thursday and Friday. Will be refereeing Australia v Canada in a pre-tournament trial match tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon).I thought it might be worth a mention on Carnarvon but not one to blow my own trumpet. Not sure if I can send photos from here but will endeavour to when I have a few more. Going to the beach shortly then a desert safari tonight (complete with belly dancer and dinner).
Hope all goes well for the family.
I fly back on Saturday evening and will have a two hour stopover in Singapore, before continuing on to Brisbane on Sunday (Brisbane). Reach Bris airport 7.30pm

Ellen's 14th
Ellen enjoyed her 14th Birthday Eve and Morning with a sleepover with her girlfriends (the boys departed after the movie) in our newly renovated backyard teenagers' retreat. Nanna made a special call from Fiji - having to call twice to catch the birthday girl. Our little girl was born at 1159pm so she's just going to have to wait for her present until tonight.

Kosciusko Exped
Here I am at Dead Horse Gap, Thredbo, on the final day of a four day back country snow expedition. Last Sunday, with my mate in the pic, I headed off to Lake Jindabyne then Kosciusko National Park. Monday was spent snow shoeing to a base camp at Lake Cootapatamba (~2000m). Tuesday was a 5km cross country ski around the lake including reaching the summit of Kosiusko (~2200m). Wednesday was trekking out in gale force winds and navigating in a white out with visibility down to ~20m. Lots of fun.

Anyways here I am with my little sister just waiting for a birthday message from Australia. My Dad's still trying to join the blog. He should be able to work it out and when he does we'll post some stuff to share with all of you.

Commitment
Today I’m going to suggest we make a commitment. A commitment in her honour, her and Pa’s. That (at least) every second year we plan a gathering of the extended family. That we identify at least one key person in each of the families within the extended family to be a member of our planning group (our “committee” if you like) and together we organize the when, where and what. I am happy to convene. I see a calendar of birthdays for the extended family being brought together and shared around (updated when necessary), a database of contact numbers, email lists, a web site of family photos and brief updates on news from family members (we need a web site manager – who’s willing to help?). A booklet of Ma and Pa’s maxims for life. A listing of occupations of family members: ways in which we can help each other along in life. This would be her dream I believe.
Vision
I believe each of us has also been left with a significant responsibility. If we have truly appreciated what she has done for us, what she and Pa have done for us, then we need to keep working on her life’s work. This is what has made the difference for us in life. And she has handed this responsibility over to us now. To each of us. We can let it slip now and be like any other family on the planet or we can take responsibility and step up to the task. This means working at our relationships with each other. Staying in contact, seeing each other where possible and taking a genuine interest in what’s occurring in each others families. Each of us has been shown how to create a wonderful extended family because of her leadership (she and Pa). We can each move on to create our own “Walker family” where our own children and their children spend much time together. We can bring the cousins and second cousins and third cousins together, make and encourage phone calls and emails, invite extended family around, have them to stay, go on trips together, drop in and just spend time with each other or.… we can let it pass.
